Beautiful Lies $1.86 If Ridley Jones had slept ten minutes later or had taken the subway instead of waiting for a cab, she would still be living the beautiful lie she used to call her life. She would still be the privileged daughter of a doting father and a loving mother. Her life would still be perfect–with only the tiny cracks of an angry junkie for a brother and a charming drunk with shady underworld connections for an uncle to mar the otherwise flawless whole. But that’s not what happened. Instead, those inconsequential decisions lead her to perform a good deed that puts her in the right place at the right time to unleash a chain of events that brings a mysterious package to her door–a package which informs her that her entire world is a lie. Suddenly forced to question everything she knows about herself and her family, Ridley wanders into dark territory she never knew existed, where everyone in her life seems like a stranger. She has no idea who’s on her side and who has something to hide–even, and maybe especially, her new lover, Jake, who appears to have secrets of his own. Sexy and fast-paced, Beautiful Lies is a true literary thriller with one of the freshest voices and heroines to arrive in years. Lisa Unger takes us on a breathtaking ride in which every choice Ridley makes creates a whirlwind of consequences that are impossible to imagine . . . . Composers in the Movies: Studies in Musical Biography $52.25 Amadeus . . . Yankee Doodle Dandy . . . Swanee River . . . Rhapsody in Blue. Even before movies had sound, filmmakers dramatized the lives of composers. Movie biographies–or biopics–have depicted composers as diverse as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, George M. Cohan, Stephen Foster, and George Gershwin. In this enticing book, the first devoted entirely to such films, John C. Tibbetts surveys different styles and periods from the Hollywood of the 1920s and 1930s to the international cinema of today, exploring the role that film biographies play in our understanding of history and culture. Tibbetts delves into such questions as: How historically accurate are composer biopics? How and why have inaccuracies and distortions been perpetrated? What strategies have been used to represent visually the creative process? The book examines the films in several contexts and considers their role in commodifying and popularizing music. Extensive archival research, dozens of illustrations, and numerous interviews make this an appealing book for film and music enthusiasts at all levels. |

More Than a Dream: Rediscovering the Life and Films of Vilma Banky $21.51 The name Vilma Banky is often relegated to dusty history books, fated to be mentioned only in passing. Today, her fame is eclipsed by the men she worked with, and her life remains a mystery to even the most ardent silent film fan. But she was a superstar, plain and simple.Movie mogul Sam Goldwyn saw in her what millions of audiences around the world would soon embrace – the soft, milk-white hands, corn-silk hair, and effortless femininity. Charlie Chaplin was a fan, as was John Gilbert, President Calvin Coolidge, Adolf Hitler, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. The story of Vilma Banky is almost too fantastic, but underneath it all, given fame and opportunity, she struggled to make things right. Goldwyn”s long obfuscated Hungarian Rhapsody reemerges from years of misconceptions to reveal what made her such an international sensation in the ”20s. |
